5 Ways to Stay Clean and Serene
Chaos is everywhere. There I said it. Now what do we do about it? How do we stay serene when life is chaotic? Whether it’s the kids screaming, work drama, plans falling through and causing problems, misunderstandings with friends, etc… these things are going to happen.
Tips For a Serene Life
1. Acceptance
Like I said above, chaos is everywhere. We don’t have to be a part of it, we can sit back and let the chaos unfold without being in the middle of the drama. It’s going to happen, accept it.
2. It’s not personal
When someone is flipping out, that’s on them. How I react is on me. If I take their actions personal then I’m going to react poorly. If I see that their behavior is about them and not me, I’m able to have compassion for that person.
3. Breathe!
When things are going crazy around you it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Stop! Breathe! There is the 3 second breathing technique. Basically you count to three and breathe in slowly. You hold the breath for three seconds, then you slowly breath out for three seconds. Do that three times and you will find that you are calmer afterward.
4. Step away
Sometimes you just need to remove yourself from a situation. That can be difficult if you are at work or stuck at home with the kids, but excuse yourself and go to the bathroom. Get centered. Say the serenity prayer. Once you’ve grounded yourself, enter the situation with a clearer head.
5. Don’t dwell on it
If craziness happens at work, school, with your friends, kids etc, once it’s over, let it go. There’s no need to rehash the situation over and over in your head. If you hold on to past anger, resentments, chaos, you only damage yourself, your wellbeing, your mental and spiritual health. As they say in many 12 step fellowships… Let go, let God.
Remember
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
