Recovery is a Family Affair!
A home with a person who has a substance use disorder can be a destructive environment for children. Alternatively, a home that has a parent in recovery can be an exceptionally healthy environment.
Unfortunately, many parents can’t get to their vital 12-step meetings due to parental obligations. This can have detrimental consequences, such as a relapse. It’s a frustrating dilemma. You’re a better parent when you attend meetings, but you can’t get to meetings because you’re a parent.
The Ann Arbor Women’s Group’s free child care program fulfills a crucial need for parents in recovery. Since December 2010 A2WG has provided safe, free child care while parents attend their 12-step meetings.
They leave their child with us for 1.5 hours worry-free and get the much-needed recovery they (and their child) deserve. This program is offered at select meetings for women, men, and family members who are in recovery (AA and Alanon). Those meetings are listed below.
Child Care staff is:
- Red Cross certified
- Trained by seasoned child care workers
Interested? No need to call ahead, just go to the children’s room at the churches before the selected meetings. The first time you attend, you will need to fill out some paperwork.
Currently, the A2WG free child care program is on hold due to the pandemic. We will update this page as soon as child care resumes.
Child Care Staff Bio’s
Elyssa, Child Care Coordinator
Hello! I’m Elyssa. In spring 2020 I graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in sociology, which I enjoy very much. In my free time, I really like practicing Spanish and exercising as well. I started helping with the A2WG child care back in 2015 as a substitute, and have now been the child care coordinator for about three years. It is always so fun getting to know all the kids and their families over time, and knowing that we’re providing a helpful service makes it that much better!
Emma, Child Care Assistant
My name is Emma, and I have been working in the child care program here for about 3 years now. I am currently a junior at the University of Michigan studying environmental science and creative writing. Outside of school, I like to spend my time hiking and biking as much as I can. I thoroughly enjoy my time in child care and love seeing the kids and parents every week!
Haily, Child Care Sub
My name is Haily and I graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor’s in biology. I plan to go back to school to become a radiology technician. I currently work full time in healthcare and I have been a substitute child care giver with A2WG for the past couple years now.
